What does logistics mean in retail?
Retail logistics is the work behind a stocked shelf. For a retailer in Southern California it usually means four jobs: keeping stores replenished, shipping wholesale orders to retail partners on their terms, getting fixtures and displays into new or remodeled stores, and delivering large purchases to customers. Alvy Logistics handles all four from one warehouse in Valencia, at the north end of Los Angeles County, so the stock and the delivery are booked with the same coordinator.
That matters for retail distribution because stores do not care which company owns which step. They care that the delivery arrives in the receiving window, matches the paperwork and comes off the truck without blocking the sales floor. From Valencia, stores across Los Angeles County are a routine run, about 40 miles to downtown, and Orange County and Inland Empire stores are quoted the same way, on the base rate plus mileage.
How do retail distribution and store replenishment routes work?
Retail replenishment works best on a schedule. A box truck or cargo van leaves Valencia on a set day, runs your stores in order, and comes back with returns and empty totes. Because the stops share one driver and one vehicle, a route is quoted per stop or per route rather than per delivery, so you are not paying a full run minimum each time a store runs low. Store deliveries are booked and followed in Alvy’s online shipper portal.
For a single urgent store delivery, such as a top seller that sells through midweek, a same-day box truck delivery starts at $200 for the first 20 miles. Liftgate and pallet jack service are added when the store has no dock, and listed on your quote.
It is the store side of our final mile delivery work.
Shipping wholesale orders to a retailer’s routing guide
Selling to a retailer means shipping to its distribution center under its routing guide. The guide sets the carton labels, how pallets are built, what paperwork travels with the freight, how to request a pickup or book a delivery appointment, and the chargebacks for each mistake.
We pick wholesale orders by the carton or pallet from the same inventory as your direct orders, build them to the guide with GS1-128 carton labels, send advance ship notices and EDI, and stage them for pickup. Orders leaving Southern California move as LTL or truckload, arranged through Accurate Freight Systems LLC, the licensed property broker in our group, and quoted per shipment. See B2B and wholesale fulfillment for how routing guide orders run, and LTL shipping for how retail freight is quoted.
Store, wholesale and online orders draw on one inventory in the Logiwa client portal, where your store and sales channels connect (for example Shopify). Lot and expiry dates are tracked, so dated stock ships oldest date first. Parcel carriers pick up at the Valencia dock, and international parcels ship from the same building.
How does a store rollout run?
Store rollout logistics is a timing problem. Fixtures, displays, signage and opening stock arrive from different vendors on different dates, and each store needs its set on a specific day, not before the floor is ready and not after the opening.
A rollout runs in four steps:
- Receive. Every vendor ships to Valencia. Each delivery is counted and any damage is noted on arrival.
- Hold and sort. Pieces are stored and sorted by store, using short-term warehouse storage on terms that end when the rollout does.
- Release by store. On the date each store is ready, its set goes out on a box truck with a crew.
- Deliver and set. Retail fixture delivery means pieces come off the truck, go where the floor plan shows, and the packaging leaves with the crew.
Installation, millwork and electrical work stay with your fixture installer or store team. Our job is that every piece is on the floor, in the right spot and undamaged when they arrive.
White glove delivery to your customers
Sofas, dining sets, lighting and other large purchases sold in store often need more than a parcel carrier. White glove delivery takes the piece into the customer’s room of choice, sets it up with light assembly, and removes the cartons. White glove delivery starts at $160 by cargo van or $325 by box truck for a local delivery. Your store books each delivery and is invoiced for it. We do not handle household moves or residential relocations.
Store and wholesale returns
Store returns, damages and seasonal overstock ride back to Valencia on the regular replenishment route instead of a separate pickup, and retailer returns come back by the carton or pallet. There each item is inspected and restocked or set aside for your decision, as our reverse logistics services page explains step by step.
What do we need to quote store delivery or a rollout?
For store routes, send the store addresses, delivery days and windows, and what a typical delivery looks like (cartons, pallets or racks). For a rollout, send the store list, opening dates and the vendor list. For wholesale, send the retailer names and their routing guides. A coordinator calls you back during business hours with a written quote for the route, rollout or orders. Business clients are invoiced.
