What is logistics in manufacturing?
Manufacturing logistics is everything that has to move so production does not stop: materials and parts coming in, kits going to the line, finished goods going out, and the urgent runs in between. For a manufacturer in Southern California, the useful question is not which of the many manufacturing logistics companies has the biggest network. It is who can get a car or a box truck to a supplier in Orange County when a machine is down and the replacement part is sitting on that supplier’s shelf.
Alvy Logistics runs a 58,000 sq ft warehouse in Valencia, in the Santa Clarita Valley, where aerospace and defense, medical devices and advanced manufacturing are among the main local industries. From Valencia, the I-5 runs south to the San Fernando Valley and downtown Los Angeles, and the I-210 heads east toward the Inland Empire. Contracted drivers cover runs in cars, cargo vans and 20 to 26 ft box trucks, so a sensor in an envelope and a crated fixture each get the vehicle that fits.
Same-day parts runs when a line is waiting
The urgent case is familiar to any plant: a tooling insert, a sensor or a fixture has to reach the floor before the next shift. A same-day courier run by car starts at $45 for the first 20 miles, and a cargo van at $80. Local pallet and expedited box truck runs often go the same day too. Once a run repeats, such as parts going out for plating or heat treating every Tuesday and Thursday, it can become a scheduled route quoted per stop or per route, which usually costs less than booking each trip. When the work fills a day, book a dedicated driver and vehicle for the day or set hours. Runs are booked and followed in Alvy’s online shipper portal.
Scheduled runs are also how a plant moves toward just-in-time supply. Materials arrive in smaller lots, timed to the production schedule, instead of filling the floor weeks ahead.
When the part is a full load or the run is long, expedited freight services put it on its own truck, and drivers based in the Inland Empire take runs between plants and distribution centers there.
Inbound materials: receiving and holding what the plant needs
Floor space in a plant is expensive, and raw materials, purchased parts and packaging take up a lot of it. We receive inbound materials in Valencia, count them against the packing list or purchase order, flag shortages and damage, and hold them in pallet storage from $25 per pallet per month. When the plant calls for them, they go out on the next scheduled run or a same-day box truck. Materials imported by ocean container can be unloaded here too: once the drayage carrier your forwarder books drops the container at our dock, unloading is quoted per container.
Finished goods storage and outbound freight
Finished goods storage is the other half. Pallets of finished product wait in Valencia until a customer order releases them, then leave by the mode that fits:
- Box truck for deliveries inside Southern California, straight from our dock to the customer. See box truck delivery, from $200 for the first 20 miles.
- LTL for one to about six pallets going further. See LTL shipping.
- Truckload for a full production run, a heavy machine or anything that should go straight from your dock to the customer without a terminal stop. See truckload shipping.
LTL and truckload lanes beyond Southern California are arranged through Accurate Freight Systems LLC, the licensed property broker in our group (MC-572734), with an authorized motor carrier. Alvy Logistics (ALVY BROS DELIVERS INC, USDOT 3443448) hauls box truck freight inside the region on its own carrier authority. The carrier vs broker vs 3PL guide explains why that distinction matters on a bill of lading.
Kitting components for the line
Kitting in manufacturing means the line pulls one kit with every part an assembly needs, instead of searching ten bins. We build kits to your bill of materials from stock held in Valencia, label them by job or work order, and deliver them on the schedule production sets. Service kits for field technicians and spare-parts kits for customer orders work the same way. Kitting is quoted per project once we see the parts list and volumes; see kitting and assembly for how pricing works.
What industrial logistics with us does not include
We do not move hazardous materials, so flammable solvents and adhesives, compressed gases and other regulated freight need a carrier set up for them. We do not rig or install machinery, and we do not run port drayage. Industrial logistics is also the name of a real estate category; we offer warehouse space by the pallet or by the square foot, not whole buildings.
What to send for a manufacturing logistics quote
List the pickup and delivery points, the parts or pallets with weights and dimensions, how often the run repeats, and any dock hours or appointment rules at either end. For storage, send pallet counts and how fast stock turns. For kitting, send the bill of materials and expected kit volume. Expect a call back from a coordinator during business hours, Monday to Friday, and a written quote. Business clients are invoiced.
