What is expedited freight?
Expedited freight services move truck freight on a deadline. Instead of waiting for space on a scheduled LTL route, the shipment gets its own truck, loaded at pickup and driven straight to the delivery address. No terminal transfers, no other shippers’ stops, no waiting for a trailer to fill.
That is also why expedited freight shipping costs more. You are paying for a truck and a driver committed to one load, often at short notice and sometimes at night, and very often for the drive back empty.
Expedited trucking inside Southern California, often the same day
For expedited trucking inside the region, Alvy Logistics is the carrier: our drivers take 20 to 26 ft box trucks direct from pickup to delivery anywhere in Los Angeles County, Orange County or the Inland Empire. Freight that is staged and ready when you call can often move the same day: production parts, store fixtures, or trade show and live event freight. When a deadline needs a truck standing by, a driver and box truck can be booked as a dedicated block for a day or set hours.
Phones are answered Monday to Friday, 8am to 8pm Pacific, but the run does not have to fit those hours. It can be scheduled overnight, between 8pm and 8am, or on a weekend, with the timing charge listed on your quote. Small urgent items that fit a car or a cargo van cost less as a same-day courier run, which starts at $45 by car.
For the vehicle sizes and what fits in each, see same day freight delivery by box truck. Line-down parts runs for plants are covered under manufacturing logistics.
How does expedited freight shipping work on longer lanes?
When an urgent load has to leave Southern California, such as a machine part for a plant in Phoenix or a display for a trade show in Las Vegas, the lane is arranged through Accurate Freight Systems LLC, the licensed property broker in our group (MC-572734), which finds an authorized motor carrier to run the load direct, on a truck of its own.
Plan around driving time. Federal hours-of-service rules let a property-carrying driver drive at most 11 hours, within a 14-hour window, after 10 consecutive hours off duty (49 CFR 395.3). A lane longer than one driver’s day includes a rest, so ask what arrival is realistic before you commit to one downstream, and treat it as an estimate.
Why does expedited freight cost more?
- Exclusive use. One load pays for the whole truck, where LTL splits it across shippers.
- Short notice. A truck and driver are pulled onto your job now, not when it suits a schedule.
- The empty return. A truck sent direct often comes back without a load, and that drive is part of the price.
- Timing. Night, weekend and holiday runs cost more, here as with most carriers.
Locally, an expedited run starts from the same base as any box truck run: from $200, which covers the first 20 miles. After the first 20 miles, mileage can start as low as $1.20 a mile, depending on the vehicle and the route, and it is set on your written quote. Night or weekend timing goes on top and is listed on the quote as its own line.
Expedited truck, LTL or on-board courier: which one fits?
| Option | How it moves | Typical speed | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| LTL | Shared trailer, through terminals | Business days | Freight that can wait |
| Truckload | Own truck, scheduled pickup | The planned day | Full loads on a plan |
| Expedited truck | Own truck, dispatched now | Often same day within the region | Urgent loads by road |
| On-board courier | A courier on a commercial flight | The next suitable flight | Small, critical parts |
For a full load that is not urgent, truckload shipping costs less. When the parts are small and the deadline is too tight for a truck, an on-board courier carries them by air from LAX, SAN or SFO.
How do I choose an expedited freight company?
- Find out who hauls it. Look the company up on FMCSA SAFER. A carrier runs the truck under motor carrier authority; a broker books a carrier under broker authority. Either is legitimate, as long as you know which you are hiring.
- Ask what truck is coming. A cargo van and a box truck with a liftgate are different jobs at an address without a dock.
- Get the charges in writing. Mileage, waiting time and night or weekend timing belong on the quote, not on the invoice.
- Ask how you will hear about the load while it is moving, and who to call if the deadline moves.
How to book expedited freight services
- Call with the details: pickup and delivery addresses, the deadline, piece count, weight and dimensions.
- Say what the receiver needs: dock hours, a liftgate, a named contact.
- Confirm the written quote, and ask for the estimated arrival.
- Have the freight staged so the driver can load and go.
For a same-day run, call during business hours rather than requesting a quote online.
